"Missed" Connections

You were walking west on Armitage. Faded skinny jeans, red handkerchief and brown sweater. Thought you were cute…

If you just happen to be the girl, boy or done-up accessory dog that applies to this ad, then boy-oh-boy did fate work in your favor.

Now I’m a firm believer in all things fate. I find it a much more relaxing way of being. But this relatively recent phenomenon has really got me questioning the parameters of what we consider “destiny.”

The world: take it or leave it

It wasn't hard to find someone who wanted to talk. In fact, I had my pick of lost souls to choose from. It was quite the eye-opener just to see people clamor for some attention from another human being. Most people shy away from interviews with the media unless it involves damage control, but one man, James, didn't seem to care who he was talking to as long as someone was listening.

So I’m looking for two middle-aged Jewish women at an antique fair …

Let me clarify. I’m looking for two specific middle-aged Jewish women at an antique fair. They are my mom and her cousin Judy. Being the good, loyal son that I am (and proving that you should never just say “Uh huh. Uh huh. Yeah, that sounds great,” when you’re not really paying attention on the phone), I had agreed to accompany them to Artopolis, an art fair/exhibit going on this weekend on three floors of the Merchandise Mart.

Body Acceptance through Burlesque

“You’re taking a burlesque class?” my mother asks me over the phone. “But why?” I’ve been asking myself that same question for a while. I’m clumsy and awkward by nature. Overall, this seems like humiliation waiting to happen. But as I talked to my friends who are Chicago burlesque dancers, all of them have emphasized to me how fun and self-accepting burlesque can be. They have told me how performing the art of tease has given them self-confidence they’ve never had before and taught them to accept their bodies no matter what shape or size.

Riot in Bucktown

The snacks served were Chex Mix, gummy bears, PBR and cupcakes decorated with razor blades and brass knuckles of frosting.

"It's because I'm so tough," joked the organizer, whose neck was also decorated with a razor blade - tattoo, not frosting.

The Young Women’s Empowerment Project: Respecting Girls in the Sex Trade

The Young Women’s Empowerment Project is one of the most unique feminist organizations in Chicago and the country. The group is collectively run by girls and trans-girls in the sex trade and the street trade. YWEP describes its members as women from the ages of 12 to 23 who have been involved with “trading sex or being sexual for money, gifts, drugs, or survival needs including exotic dancing, escorting, phone sex, adult internet sites, survival sex and all the other ways girls can be affected by the sex trade and street economy.”
