Frank Lloyd Wright called him Lieber Meister. He was the country's first modern architect. He was a brilliant designer. This is the work of Louis Sullivan.

Frank Lloyd Wright's adoration for fellow architect Louis Sullivan speaks volumes. Wright distinguished himself in his own love of his work. His passion glowed in the most minute detail. Visit his Oak Park home & his clever design cherishes familial privacy, while accommodating a piano cleverly tucked away to maximize spatial use. Though many of his loyal followers recognize the distinctive exterior eaves, Frank Lloyd Wright's distinctive interiors show precise attention to exquisite detail.
Visit the Art Institute of Chicago. There you will find many fine examples of Sullivan's ornate ironwork design which once adorned the Chicago Stock Exchange. Imagine the architect preparing such sketches & then examining samples of the scrollwork before supervising its installation in to the elevators of the Chicago Stock Exchange.
Is there room for such artistry in today's modern architectural design?
Louis Sullivan's work is terrific and the Carson's building is fortunate to be at State and Madison, the very epicenter of Chicago, because the symbolism is powerful. Sullivan buildings are one of the elements that distinguish Chicago from other cities. It's incredible that numerous Sullivan buildings have been demolished, notably the Stock Exchange.
The LaSalle Street financial district sharply contrasts the east side's historic character with the modernistic west side of the street from Chicago City Hall south to the Chicago Board of Trade Building.
The Rookery, at Adams and LaSalle is possibly Sullivan's crowning achievement. None other than Frank Lloyd Wright had the audacity to remake the atrium in that building.
Cast as the Untouchables movie police station, the Rookery continues to be one of my favorite examples of both Louis Sullivan & Frank Lloyd Wright's best work.
I prefer to patronize those specialty retailers such as Brooks Brothers because their monthly rent makes this architectural gem financially viable.
I hate to burst the bubbles of those here who think that the beautiful Rookery building was the work of Louis Sullivan, but Mr. Sullivan had no involvement with this project. It was originally designed in the mid-1880's by the Chicago firm of Burnham & Root, and the lobby was renovated in approx. 1905 by Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1931 the public spaces were again updated by another famous Prairie School architect, and former employee of FLW, William Drummond.
Thank you, racegeek.
That's the advantage of fellow Windy Citizen missle guidance.
The Carson's State Street (The Great Street) rotunda entrance remains one of the most recognizable examples of legendary architect Louis Sullivan's best work.
Doh! The joke's on me. LOL Well, I got the Frank Lloyd Wright part correct. I think. Maybe it was Bob Vila. Doh.
