From the updated story:

Cook County commissioners Tuesday did not muster enough support to override Board President Todd Stroger’s veto of a move to eliminate a controversial 1 percentage point increase in the local sales tax.

But immediately after the vote — which leaves Mr. Stroger’s veto, and the sale tax hike, in place — commissioners voted to roll back the tax increase in stages and over a longer period of time.

The first vote tallied 11-4, with two board members voting “present.” Overriding the veto would have required the votes of 14 commissioners.

In a second vote to kill the tax increase, commissioners voted 10-7 to phase out the increase over a longer period of time. But indications are that Mr. Stroger will veto that measure, as well.

Mr. Stroger indicated he’s only ready to roll back a quarter-penny.
