Chicago's official story of a relatively peaceful July 3rd fireworks show doesn't agree with reports of lakefront gang violence--and a shooting at Buckingham Fountain.

Another ChicagoNow scribe posted in the comment thread of my post to confirm hearing multiple shots fired on the Taste grounds during the evening of July 3rd, including at 8:30 p.m. (the time of the alleged Buckingham Fountain shooting.)
And that would be me :)
Yes, I was there and I'm near certain I heard multiple shots, at the very least one around 8:30, just before the fireworks.
This is more than social media rumors. There's something to this. May not be the most significant thing in the world, but it's too bad the city won't be more transparent about what really happened.
What would you have them do? How could they be more transparent?
An appropriately worded FOIA, http://bit.ly/ER1S4, request to CPD for 911 and 311 calls for that specific period should bring some answers...my guess is it will come in a couple of months.
Yes! Now go get an avatar :-)
I am keeping an eye on Every Block Chicago waiting for the crime to be up to July 3 so I can check the reports of violence in the Loop.
Nelson, that's exactly the right thing to do. I think Everyblock stats will have some interesting things to say.
BREAKING: Eyewitness comment on Chicagosphere strongly suggests a young woman shot at Buckingham Fountain around 8:30 on Independence Eve.
There's another good roundup of local (non-)coverage of the Taste on the Chicago Public Radio blog.
I want to let commenters know I've posted a follow-up to my original story detailing the things that have happened since Monday--including the executive director of the Mayor's Office of Special Events, Megan McDonald, leaving an eyewitness account of her experience at Buckingham Fountain in my Chicagosphere comment thread, my ongoing activities to continue to investigate the story, and my rebuttal to a closed-minded response I got from a local print reporter.
If you're so inclined, you can find the follow-up post here.
