In Chicago, some of the city's most deprived neighborhoods see more than their fair share of violence, with shootings an everyday occurrence.

This story sheds some much-needed light on something very disturbing here in Chicago. I think the local media steers clear of reporting about things like this for fear of appearing racist. It takes an outsider to call a spade a spade. The people who breed dogs to fight eachother are sick.
Cockfighting, bull fighting or canine combat? Why do some accept such wanton animal violence while others prefer boxing, football & rugby?
By sharing such stories are we encouraging more of the same, adelle77?
Heck no. I think everyone should read this story so they learn what a "fight cut" is and realize that this terrible practice is happening here in Chicago. If no one knows, nothing will be done about it.
There's a huge difference between people into boxing and people into dogfighting. Boxers are human beings who choose to box. Dogs are animals, bred and coerced into fighting. When a boxer loses, he's not hung to death or shot in the head unless it's a really bad movie. Big difference.
A friend of mine used to date a guy who fought dogs for a living (was his ONLY lively hood); needless to say he was a jerk but I do know he made LOTS of money from it and was not ashamed to say what he did for a living
Tio Hardiman, interviewed in the story, also works to get guns off the streets. Gapers Block profiled him last year.
By that rationale, does all crime reporting only breed more crime? I don't think it's that simple - a well-written story will bring out the right kind of response.
I worked with a lovely African-American woman who had been mauled by a fight dog when she was a girl. She had numerous large scars in various places on her body. A side note: researchers believe there is a correlation between animal abuse and psychopathy (well duh).
I also agree with you, it is very sick the way they train these dogs to kill. What's worse is the torture these dogs are prone to receive (the hangings, shootings, dismembering and mutilation of body parts, etc.) They can't win for losing.
And there's an opportunity here, to show people how dogs ought to be treated. There aren't enough stories on how things work, when they work well.
I don't use phrases like "call a spade a spade" for fear of appearing racist.
