Prosecutors Turn Tables on Student Journalists - NYTimes.com

For over a decade, students at Northwestern University’s journalism school have been scrutinizing the work of prosecutors and the police. The investigations into old crimes, as part of the Medill Innocence Project, have led to the release of 11 inmates. Now, the Cook County State's Attorney has subpoenaed the students' grades, grading criteria, syllabus, expense reports and e-mails.

Great share, jasontinkey! The New York Times' initiative may pay off handsomely with more thoughtful news coverage of the Illinois market.

this was in today's national print edition, so i don't know if this is connected to their upcoming chicago coverage. the tribune covered this in a couple stories last week but not nearly as in-depth. but maybe some well-written competition will force the trib to improve?

I'm pleasantly surprised that the NY Times is getting this out there. I understand that prosecutors want to be cautious but some of the demands are ridiculous? Student grade reports and emails?

That's what happens when you become a part of the story you cover, shammara86. Washington Post reporters learned the same when their investigative reporting toppled President Richard Nixon on August 8th, 1974.

This all seems like Chicago is embarrassed that students are doing a better job investigating and doing it without warrants and all other legal clout.

Personally, if I ever get framed for something, I am hiring this class.
