CeaseFire is an Evidence-Based Approach to Reducing Violence

4
ceasefirechicago.org - 131 views    bury it

The Chicago Program for Violence CeaseFire campaign is an evidence-based public health approach to reducing shootings and killings. Our methods for reversing the violence epidemic use highly trained street violence interrupters and outreach staff, public education campaigns and community mobilization. CeaseFire is one of the only proven techniques for making neighborhoods safer.

Been trying to get away from posting links to articles in the big two papers... not that there's anything wrong with that. I just figure that beat's pretty well covered.

Been trying to trawl around for interesting links instead.

Don't like it? Vote it down.

"CeaseFire is one of the only proven techniques for making neighborhoods safer."

that 2 profs one from UIC and one from NU would advance an unreviewed, web-published co-relational study of a highly complex phenomenom as "proof" is a sad commentary on their desperation to justify their program

that so many people are willing to accept such a study as some kind of "proof" is a sad commentary on the level of science literacy in our society

Ha! dirt. now we're talking.

The "evidence-based" claims are what caught my eye.

Thank you for your participation in discussing this critical public policy matter, Hugh & Len! If you arrive @ the answer to curbing urban street violence, you should be nominated for the Noble Peace Prize, gentlemen.

It not studies it's study.

And it's not a Dept. of Justice study. The authors are a team assembled by a NU prof. The report was partially funded by a DoJ grant. The report specifically states:

"Findings and conclusions of the research reported here are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the official position or policies of the U.S. Department of Justice."

Well of course I didn't read it or I would not have made the dumb comment! So you are saying that the website is misrepresenting the study, which is the probably least of their offenses. Anyway, it seems to me that you guys have been following this story and have an ax to grind, which is fine, but not everyone else is following this as closely as you are and has the same interest in the story.
