Expand that to other social venues, tracyswartz?

Such as restaurants, gyms and CAPS LOCKS in e-mails?

That shit's the worst.

Him: "HEY. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO TONIGHT?"
Me: "I FIGURED WE COULD GO SHOUT AT EACHOTHER."

I've not seen much cell phone use at gyms. I think that would annoy me a good bit, too.

Glad to see the CTA's heading off what will certainly become a major nuisance as it gets easier for people to talk on their cell phones on the trains. Riding can be a cramped, unpleasant affair as is. Add a bunch of people talking loudly to themselves and it gets downright gruesome.

Tracy, an idea for a future column, related to this: Cellphone use by CTA line? Which line has the most jerks on their cell phones?

I'd guess the Brown line, myself. Back when I was doing the whole morning commute thing, I'd see lots of other banksters lke msyelf taking the brown line into the Loop. If cell phone usage is picking up, I'd imagine it's happening there the most.

Good thought. I hear more about people complaining about bus chatter than train chatter, presumably because of the lack of service in subways. The letters I receive suggest that most of the chatterboxes are on the Red Line but I also get more complaints about the Red Line than any other line, so there's that ...

The funny part that's going unaddressed here is the fact that the CTA owns the wiring in the tunnels that makes cellphone chatter possible while underground and rents it to cellphone companies.

CTA to carriers: Give us money so your customers can talk while they're on the El!

CTA to riders: STFU!

Do you think they're making serious money doing this or just trying to regulate the service?

I bet they're raking in the dough. These cellphone companies live on access. If they can get to commuters, they'll pay just about anything to be there.

Ugh..I hear it the worst on buses. It's the most annoying thing in the world. I don't want to hear someone's life story, or them cursing out their spouse, or gossiping about petty things! The worst is when they get mad for people looking at them funny or being bold enough to ask them to pipe down! Ughhh.
