Great synthesis of Chicago history, usability, and the economic costs of color choice. As a U of C grad I demand that the next El line be maroon.
Do El line colors mean anything?

I've always wondered how they choice the colors for the lines. I think it's cool to finally get the history behind it.
Fascinating post. Thanks so much. Like Cecil, I too have wondered what color the next line will be, since we've used up all the ones you get in the basic Crayola pack. Razzle dazzle rose, maybe? Burnt sienna?
Gray line? Black or white lines, maybe? I dunno.
Commuters could borrow the expression, sooner or later everyone meet the (Joe) Black line, Chess87.
Yes, that was a great piece but I was SHOCKED to see that Cecil wrote "Street Street" for "State Street" (I assuming that's what he meant.) It's always disconcerting to see the little man behind the curtain.
Marketing mavens know that there's solid science to color selection. The two most powerful colors are those used on Chicago's Red & Blue lines. Maroon may merit consideration, but let's make a case for the why behind the what, whet!
