If she wasn't a lesbian, do you think the piece would have said "Laura Ricketts, who has a husband, said..." or would have omitted that information?

Omitted. It's just an interesting, yet overused, story angle. Other examples, "First woman baseball owner" or "First black coach in the super bowl." Just a fluff angle on a business story.
