Illinois cancels $1 million grant to Pilgrim Baptist Church

chicagonow.com - 6 weeks ago - 170 views

The grant, promised to the church by former Governor Rod Blagojevich, was supposed to help rebuild the historic South Side church following a 2006 fire, but Rob Sherman (the blogger who wrote this article) filed a lawsuit alleging giving the money to a church would violate the Illinois constitution.

What's the practical purpose served, Kate Shellnutt?

How could a government agency have given tax money to a church, while maintaining church & state separation?

In fact, reports indicate that the state money financed the relocation of a school formerly located in that fire- ravaged church to another office building in Chicago. Contractors have yet to satisfy building occupancy requirements, according to published report.

I was with him until he started spewing BS that had nothing to do with his central point:

Pilgrim Baptist Church remains a decrepit blight on the community, with no prospect of it being rebuilt in the foreseeable future. Indeed, it is a perfect metaphor for what heaven is: Once you look past the phony fancy facade of pearly gates, you realize that there's nothing there. No god, no people -- nothing. It's completely empty, just like the above picture of Pilgrim Baptist.

Glad to know this dude found incontrovertible proof of something people have been arguing about for thousands of years.

They ought to tear down the remains of that building and let the community move on.

Which is probably going to cost taxpayers a pretty penny. I agree that we shouldn't be propping up organizations that don't pay taxes, but let's not pretend that there's a cheap way to take care of this problem.

I'm not surprised by their decision to try to perpetrate this crime against us. After all, they're Christians. They don't have the same high ethical standards that we atheists have.

Next time, I'll stop holding back and tell you how I really feel.

Here's how I feel: every atheist I've ever met was a real jerk.

Add one more to that list.
