Chicago has never been a great deli town, and it isn't getting any better.

Zingel Mans in Hinsdale is one of my favorites. I really wish it wasn't so far away though.

Anyone got a favorite deli not named Manny's? I used to love Frances' in Lincoln Park.

I like Max's in Highland Park (not to be confused with Max & Benny's in Northbrook); and it's not a full-service restaurant, but Chicago Bagel & Bialy in Wheeling is pretty good.

I used to love Finkl's on South Financial Pl. They closed about two years ago and I haven't find anything to replace them.

My kingdom for some matzoh ball soup in this area. :(

JB's Deli in Edgewater (5501 N Clark) is fantastic and often overlooked because it's in a pharmacy. Extra lean corned beef on rye, fresh bagels, matzah ball soup, the works. If they fold, where will I go for grub and prescriptions?

Bittersweet has amazing matzoh ball soup. Picture here: http://makingchicagohome.com/2009/09/21/locavore-challenge-day-9/

Bittersweet, in general, has amazing everything. Mmmm...

There will never be another place like Jerry's Food & Liquor, which was on Grand east of St. Clair. Hey, don't forget Riverside Deli on Cortland. I went there for years - it's quite good.

I know it's Swedish, but you can get your German fare there as well: Erickson's on Clark, just north of Foster.

And it is a shame Meyer's is closed. Best German deli anywhere.

Meyer's will be missed, but Gene's Sausage Shop will be a 2 floor extravaganza in the same space (and more).

That's right rjcermak! Guests should enjoy the tradional setting discovered with a visit to Erickson's deli.

In fact, take a walk in the three blocks north of Foster even on a weekday evening & you'll be pleasantly surprised to find a thriving clientele.

Andersonville's 20/20 business promotion campaign encourages patrons to spend twent dollars each week for the next five months to support a series of charming shops, restaurants & cozy cafes.
