Wait...there's E. coli floating in the waters of 2 Chicago beaches? Isn't that bad?

News story says Chicago beaches are open, but there's an advisory warning people at the Montrose and Oak Street beaches that they'll be swimming in "low to moderate" traces of E. coli. What? This makes no sense. How can that be safe?

According to a recording on the city's beach hotline (312-742-3224), the advisory means that there were "low to moderate" traces of E. coli bacteria found in the waters off those beaches. That amount could be harmful to small children, the elderly or individuals with compromised immune systems, according to the recording. Swimming will be allowed at those beaches.

Wonder if the person who wrote these sentences did a double take. "Ok...low to moderate amounts of E. coli...could be harmful to children, elderly and people with weak immune systems...swimming will be allowed at those beaches." Yeah, that sounds good.

Huhn. Ok, I'm still mystified by this. I just read the same paragraph published unblinkingly in the Redeye. What on earth? I thought E. Coli was bad news.

Glad to see someone out there voicing about our watered Jewel. I had been a windsurfer and frequent dipper in the not so distant past and when I think about going out there I think twice, three times maybe. Now it's scary. Somewhere I saw instead of e.coli being the culprit it's called " TOXINS" . I guess that means a whole lot of other stuff. Guess I'll have to move to New Zealand after all.

Came across this fine lakeshore photo on Fliker yesterday (taken June 21 2009 so it says) Noticed beaches packed but where were the swimmers ? Suburbanites should check out the parks post before heading out. Anywhoo. Here it is.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/chatursunil/3648547874/

Maybe they heard the news that they could catch a horrible life-altering virus if they ventured into the water?

Steve Dahl of the Loop many years ago, would give the Lake Michigan water temp. in "Fecal GreaseBall degrees". Aahh...... giving out my age here possibly.
I Doubt the beachcombers are privy to the news......Life Guards shagged 'em off or they saw the flags. What a dissapointment that must be.

just saw nbc 5 celebrating OIC on North Ave. Beach......(6:12 pm)What the Sam Hell does that exactly mean ? Bringing in the official OIC Baton ???
We citizens of Chi Town Skecrewed for sure ??
