Free market of private health care insurance companies be able to be reformed so that Americans will be able to afford universal health care insurance?

Or is it like full employment, environmental purity & universal home ownership: noble to pursue, but too costly at the margin?

(May I invite thoughtful, restrained replies since this has become such a polarizing topic to Windy Citizens?)
