This story boldy goes where I'm not sure I ever wanted to go before.
Ira, this is awesome. As a former Soviet citizen and daughter of a father who loves these places, I really enjoyed reading about it. In fact, I love a good steam too and I also like it VERY steamy and VERY hot, not like the wussies here in the U.S. seem to prefer it :)
Anywho.. for someone like myself who's well-acqauinted with the scene and the culture, it was interesting to read an outsider's take.
Thanks for posting this! Anna, visiting the bathhouse is one of the best experiences I've had all winter- if only I'd know about it years ago.
As for the steam temperature, you are right. The Russian guys are ruthless, to the point that I heard another "regular" complain about the heat.
Hahaha, you just need to know the right people :)
As for the heat, you Americans are so soft! :) Ok., ok., so I consider myself an American too, but the reality is that you guys have had it pretty easy and aren't exactly hardened like some of those bathhouse fellas you described.
And it's not exclusive to men. At one time, I used to frequent my parents' health club and my Mom and I would relish the times when it could just be us in the steam room, because then we could crank it up as much as we wanted without getting glares from anyone.
how much does it cost?
$20 for unlimited steam room. Massage is extra.
