I think it looks pretty nice. The old design was feeling kind of patchworky. With this new one, at least all the pieces feel like they were made to be on the same page.
Is this redesign #3 of a major trib property in the last year?
I see it as an interesting lesson in how things happen.
What I mean: ChicagoNow is a nice-looking site. It was designed by one guy.
This new trib site looks like it was designed by committee, with concessions made to the folks from each of the different departments all vying for real estate. I do agree its an improvement, but only just. The old design was weird and ugly. The new one is not weird at all and just a little ugly. Do those headlines have to be so huge?
If by "the front page looks like it was designed by committee" you mean "the new front page is an abortion" then we agree completely.
That green! My eyes! Why? Why?
(loves to snark on the Trib, admittedly)
But I like the semi-intuitive, almost newspaper-esque format it takes on. They're trying to make it more reader friendly because eventually the paper half of newspaper isn't going to be around anymore.
What makes this more newspapery than the previous design? I will concede that this definitely looks a lot more like a typical newspaper web site than the last one, which truly looked like nothing else online, simply because it was so odd-looking.
The sections being arranged more like tabs, like flipping through a newspaper. the visual aspect of it at least is a bit more pleasing and appears user friendly.
I think it's a big improvement. It's still really overwhelming to go there to read your news, but at least the story pages have been simplified a good bit!
I think it is an improvement, at least at first glance. The old design was pretty horrid. The larger headers make sections easier to find.
