Author makes a very good point in the early paragaphs: the structure of Lollapalooza doesn't work so well with where popular music seems to be heading. Lolla is set up around the idea that there are megastar bands with huge audiences who belong as "headliners" and then bands of varying smaller followings who can play during earlier time slots.

But nowadays we're instead just seeing lots of bands with sizeable but no massive following. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a good example. They've got a lot of fans, but they're never going to be an "it" band the way top acts in the 80s and 90s were...because of how fragmented audiences are nowadays.
