May I invited Windy Citizens to visit the Chicago History Museum on Clark Street to learn much more about the 1933 Century of Progress which was once located on Northerly Island.
As for Chicago's South Side Washington Park planned for site of the 2016 Olympics, it was once an upscale equestrian racing venue.
Man, this footage is fantastic!
When I finally get to finishing Chicago:1968, Chicago:1933, about the Century of Progress World's Fair, is going to be my immediate follow up.
1933 marked the beginning of some interesting times - FDR had just been elected president, the entire world was in an economic depression, and, at this point in the 20th century, Fascism and Communism seemed like new and exciting ideas.
Right there on the cusp of WWII, in 1933, nobody knew what the future would hold. There was this mix of hope and dread in the air that I think would resonate well in our own time.
The fair was put on at the urging of FDR to stimulate the regional economy. The fair's motto: I Will. Gotta respect that.
All that, and, Art Deco up the wazoo!
Agreed. This is some really cool shit. It's fun just watching these people traipse around 1930s Chicago even, in their funny hats.
ESPECIALLY because of their funny hats.
