The news:

O’Hare and Midway Security Chief James Maurer was fired on Friday, Sept. 11, after allegedly getting into a heated argument with Eileen O’Connor, a top aide to Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie Andolino, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

O’Connor said she was physically attacked by Maurer, who had a $130,380 salary before getting fired.

Maurer would not comment on the whole episode, but categorically denied the charge. The former airport security chief has long been asking for more security personnel to fill current vacancies.

It's usually not a good idea to physically attack one's coworkers...

Agreed. Our bigger concern should be whether Chicago Sun Times reports of inadequate security staffing have compromised passenger safety.

Highly unlikely, but a good question nonetheless.

After the TSA implemented all those fun things that make air travel more of a hassle, I made a comment to a friend of mine about whether this would make things more secure. He told me that a friend of his was in operations at one of the nation's largest airlines, and he told him that security at the operations/maintenance level was a joke. I have no idea whether that has improved or not, but it sure didn't make me feel any better.

Unanswered questions remain:

1) Why did O'Hare & Midway Internatinal Airport security managers fail to spend budgeted security funds?
2) Did O'Hare's costly runway construction program discourage security spending?
3) Did Chief Mauer's preference for hiring sworn, off-duty police officers preclude hiring others who lacked arrest authority?
4) Did O'Hare's runway construction project redeploy security officers from protecting critical utility physical plant in favor of perimeter security on Touhy Avenue?
5) What was the nature of the so-called "heated discussion" which preceeded Chief Mauer's dismissal?

Other Windy Citizens may contribute a variety of articles or web log blogs on this matter, but these are the pressing questions which must be answered.

Excellent questions! Now let's go dig for the answers

Important story that I would have otherwise missed. I wouldn't take sides in this one, however, not knowing the two parties. Sometimes some pretty squirrely things happen in the workplace.
