This should be done for all major subcultures here: Hispanics, Asian Americans, Native Americans and African Americans. It is appalling how much of their histories as Americans have been omitted and marginalized. This is a good first move on behalf of Gov. Quinn to reverse this trend.
Non minority friends of mine from northern California know so much more about these histories than even some minorities here in Chicago, because the educational focus is different. With education, all US Americans can better understand and appreciate our shared history and why things are, to some extent, the way they are now.
