Participants in Grant Park rally for Barack Obama share feelings on that night and on America today

The gathering of nearly 250,000 in Grant Park on election night last year was hailed as a historic moment for Chicago, and not just because Barack Obama, the first African-American president, gave his acceptance speech there. Many participants described the diverse, joyful gathering as a baptism of sorts. A place where racial divisions and political cynicism gave way to newfound unity, harmony and, yes, hope.
