Chicago Police Marine unit have discovered a body on the rocks outside Loyola University Chicago's Information Commons. A student discovered the body of an unclothed, elderly male and notified Loyola Campus Safety at around 11:30 a.m. The body has not been identified yet. Phoenix was first to report.

Sun-Times is reporting that it's unclear if the body was found near lake or other body of water on campus, but the lake is the only body of water in that location (I'm a student there). Library borders lake on east side at that point.
Library in question is the one pictured on homepage: http://www.luc.edu/
I was in the library at the time of discovery but didn't see what happened. The side of the building facing the lake is all glass, so workers went around shutting all the curtains.
p.s. if photo doesn't appear right away keep hitting refresh (unless lu removes pic of library from its home page this afternoon).
Thanks for sharing this. Crazy stuff.
News scoops are meaningless anymore. What does it matter that "Phoenix was first to report"? What edge does that get you?
This dead person is breaking news because of the circumstances of his discovery. For example, not too many people are alumni of an empty lot on South Damen.
No, I mean what is the positional value of a news outlet branding itself as the first to report a story when in today's world, once you report that story, everyone else reports on it 60 seconds later on the web?
Exclusives mattered when a newspaper could get a daylong or afternoon-long jump on the competition--and thus sell more papers. But how many web hits can you convert to revenue in the minute before you don't have an exclusive anymore?
I think the Phoenix deserves props for reporting the story. But it doesn't matter in a material way that they were the first to do so.
Right, Mike. Claim intellectual property on a breaking news story? Most copyrighted reports involve a bit more investigative, entrepreneurial journalism.
qstrian, we didn't claim any copyright on the report.
and certainly no intellectual property either! We only claimed we were the first -- and if you were a college journalist who busted your ass to get a major news story BEFORE any of the big guys when you could have ignored it and slogged zombie-like to class instead, you'd be pretty damn proud of yourself too.
On the contrary, Mike, being first may not sell papes any more (plus we give ours away free anyway) but it tells YOU, the reader, that we were first on the scene and reporting firsthand instead of getting our breaking info via calls to the CPD, like the larger newspapers probably did. For example, we got our photog on the scene so quickly that we've got photos no one else in town has. That's an edge that you get as the reader, and because we're providing it, that's an edge that we have as a news outlet.
From the standpoint of city news, this is a minor story that might not get space by the Trib or Sun-Times. What's news is that it's being reported by the campus news outlet. A corpse showing up on campus happens, but not that often! Nice job. PS: isn't it amazing how many emergency personnel respond to one lonely old deceased person?
Reminds me of when i found a body floating in Montrose harbor, during smelt season.
Still worth a feather in the cap, Imaton!
I still remember my first human interest story which made the front page of the St. Louis Globe Democrat just before I graduated from SIU-Carbondale.
I'm sure that sharing this hard news story with fellow Windy Citizens has given you cause for reflection.
