a very depressing story about an undocumented immigrant: “There has to be somebody in the world that cares about him, that knows him,” he said. “He needs every opportunity to integrate, every opportunity to live.”

Wow.
What I want to know is how do they know he is an undocumented immagrant? If they know his status here in the U.S. then they should know his real name D.O.B. and more on him....
Well, now that you mention it, it does seem that the story says all that they have is a name for this guy, which means that he could have had documentation but it's lost. As the story says, "He has no identity." Therefore, the assumption that he is an undocumented illegal alien, while quite plausible, has no substantiation. They don't even know his nationality, so how can they know his legal status?!
The situation for this man is sad, but this article disgusts me as it calls for some sort of health care reform to cover people that are, by definition, in this country illegally. Make no mistake, this is what the term "undocumented" really means. If any of us went into, say, Germany, without documentation, we would be there illegally.
He's trapped here by his own doing, and is either here alone, with no family, or appears to not have a family that cares enough about him to come out of the shadows and reveal themselves as fellow illegals.
The author would appear to want to blame his "in-limbo" status on the fact that he doesn't have some means to insurance to pay for a nursing home, by which he means free insurance, which is a complete joke. He could have bought insurance at any time, but that would have meant he needed to come out of the shadows, which he obviously refused to do.
Everything that has been done for him has been at a cost to the hospital, and at a cost to the community the hospital serves, in spite of the fact that the man decided he did not owe the community which he decided to reside in the respect of legal status. This man should be counted as lucky to have not been left for dead in the street in the first place, saved by a system that was willing to save him no matter the cost, and to further be cared for in the manner he is, which appears will be the case for the rest of his life.
Your so right. I am Mexican and I am soooo lucky to have been born the good old U.S of A.. Nobody in my family is illegal but I dont see why illegals are so affraid to say hey I am illegal and want do things the right way.. It sucks for this man and I think they should put him on the news or something so the family members can claim him.. I think his family probably thinks that this man abandoned them.. how can they look for him?? its not a for sure thing that this is even his real name.. I am happy to have Insurance thru my employer and am not a burden to my country...
