A rainy wrap-up

Short video of parts of the protest as it moved along, from gathering to near the end.

Will there be another rally?

Great Job Jonathan-I have yet to see photos of today's event on any other news site.

The organizers remarked on the extreme difficulty of obtaining permits to march in Chicago - more difficultly than in most other U.S. cities. Protests in Chicago were originally scheduled for Sunday, but a long stand off with city officials was apparently only reconciled today.

Chicago denied permits to the demonstrators until the very last, rain-soaked minute --

There was supposed to be a demonstration at 4:30 at the Federal Building today....but the permit was denied to the group of Iranian-Americans who applied for it, apparently. The story is being picked up by CBS, Huffington Post, Chicagoist, and of course Windy Citizen.

The historical irony of this appears to be lost on no one --

What happened around the denial? Who was involved? How can we help?

"Chicago's denial of various permits to political demonstrators and to Yippies during the Democratic National Convention in 1968 came after prolonged attempts by the groups to secure the permits."

Ugh, Chicago. Why does this give me that uh-oh feeling.

Great pics! thanks for sharing.

I heard nothing about another rally while I was there. No one I spoke to brought it up when I asked about future plans and hopes.

I will look into it though.

Everybody thank Johnathan Nelson for being the man on the scene. He's the best there is at what he does.

In that final pic above the man in the light blue shirt began chanting "Revolution is the Solution."

But the American-Iranian crowd is dedicated to projecting a moderate position. They briskly shove the man out of their group.

Cool, thanks. I will be looking forward to seeing tweets about it.

EDIT - the url's the same but the news has changed. The protest is on!

by Nelson 23 weeks 3 days ago

I will be at the protest taking pictures and updating as it goes on with the help of Len. If you are down there too and get some pictures or have a flickr stream you think we should follow let us know.

1 points
by Len Kody 23 weeks 3 days ago

Yeah. I'll be coordinating things on this end, while receiving Nelson's raw data and posting it to the thread.

If you'll be at the protest too and you want to share something, why don't you just tweet it with the following hashtags - #iranelection #windycitizen. I'll be monitoring that twitter stream and using anything worthwhile that pops up.

Otherwise, this will be an open thread for the rest of us to observe, discuss and participate in this futuristic democratic happening.

Stay safe, Nelson!

Oh, but keep in mind that Twitter's already once postponed down time is scheduled to end at 5pm Central, right about when the protest is ready to start. So you'll be cut off before then.

We'd love it if we could get some of your photos for our Freedom of Assembly flickr group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1119845@N20/
Be safe.

The article says "federal plaza", not Daley Plaza.

Protest Set For 4:30 p.m. In Daley Plaza

The demonstration over the Iranian elections is set for 4:30 p.m. in Federal Plaza

Good catch, both are in there. I will update on where it actually is as soon as I am in the area.

Article says federal. Headline says Daley. Knowing how these stories are usually produced, the article is probably correct and the headline might have been a goof by an editor.

There is some Sister Cities festival set up in Daley Plaza right now, so I'm guessing that's not it.

Good catch.

4th Annual Chicago Sister Cities International Festival on Daley Plaza

The Chicago Sister Cities International Program will host its 4th Annual Chicago Sister Cities International Festival on Daley Plaza on June 15-18, 2009. With all 28 of our international sister cities represented, this is the only city festival that truly represents the diversity and international spirit that exists in Chicago.

If you'd like to pass the in between time with a little reading, comics writer Brian Reed has declared that The Cyber War Is Here --

Reposted here is an article that was on boingboing.net regarding the "cyberwar" in Iran and the Twitter information pipeline. I have no idea why boingboing.net isn't coming up at the moment, but I thought it bore copying and pasting over here.

Cyberwar guide for Iran elections
from Boing Boing by Cory Doctorow

Yishay sez, "The road to hell is paved with the best intentions (including mine). Learn how to actually help the protesters and not the gov't in Iran."

The purpose of this guide is to help you participate constructively in the Iranian election protests through Twitter...

The Iranian half organizing these protests comes from the "Khaneh" news. This was what a google search of the name yielded - http://www.jamei.info/mj/news/ - it appears to be a network of blogs.

The U.S. side of the protests are given support by a strong showing of UIC and Art Institute students.
