EDIT - the url's the same but the news has changed. The protest is on!
I will be at the protest taking pictures and updating as it goes on with the help of Len. If you are down there too and get some pictures or have a flickr stream you think we should follow let us know.
Yeah. I'll be coordinating things on this end, while receiving Nelson's raw data and posting it to the thread.
If you'll be at the protest too and you want to share something, why don't you just tweet it with the following hashtags - #iranelection #windycitizen. I'll be monitoring that twitter stream and using anything worthwhile that pops up.
Otherwise, this will be an open thread for the rest of us to observe, discuss and participate in this futuristic democratic happening.
Stay safe, Nelson!
The article says "federal plaza", not Daley Plaza.
Article says federal. Headline says Daley. Knowing how these stories are usually produced, the article is probably correct and the headline might have been a goof by an editor.
Oh, but keep in mind that Twitter's already once postponed down time is scheduled to end at 5pm Central, right about when the protest is ready to start. So you'll be cut off before then.
Good catch, both are in there. I will update on where it actually is as soon as I am in the area.
There is some Sister Cities festival set up in Daley Plaza right now, so I'm guessing that's not it.
We'd love it if we could get some of your photos for our Freedom of Assembly flickr group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1119845@N20/
Be safe.
Good catch.

Fixed the headline...
In a holding pattern until we get a visual from Johnathan...

First pics coming in...
The Iranian half organizing these protests comes from the "Khaneh" news. This was what a google search of the name yielded - http://www.jamei.info/mj/news/ - it appears to be a network of blogs.
The U.S. side of the protests are given support by a strong showing of UIC and Art Institute students.
The organizers remarked on the extreme difficulty of obtaining permits to march in Chicago - more difficultly than in most other U.S. cities. Protests in Chicago were originally scheduled for Sunday, but a long stand off with city officials was apparently only reconciled today.
The bags say "People's Votes"

They're singing the Iranian National Anthem
In that final pic above the man in the light blue shirt began chanting "Revolution is the Solution."
But the American-Iranian crowd is dedicated to projecting a moderate position. They briskly shove the man out of their group.
"NO MORE VIOLENCE! NO MORE VIOLENCE!"

I took a couple, but low quality with my point and shoot camera. Feel free to snarf these: http://www.flickr.com/photos/urbanophile/sets/72157619842314118/

Original tweets by Tehran twitterers pointed to this blog which planned the Chicago event to coincide with other protests worldwide on Sun. June 14th --
Chicago denied permits to the demonstrators until the very last, rain-soaked minute --

A rainy wrap-up
Everybody thank Johnathan Nelson for being the man on the scene. He's the best there is at what he does.
Great pics! thanks for sharing.
Great Job Jonathan-I have yet to see photos of today's event on any other news site.
Will there be another rally?
I heard nothing about another rally while I was there. No one I spoke to brought it up when I asked about future plans and hopes.
I will look into it though.
Short video of parts of the protest as it moved along, from gathering to near the end.
Cool, thanks. I will be looking forward to seeing tweets about it.
