the group plans to gather as many signatures as possible and present them to the Mayor and aldermen at City Hall sometime in late summer or early fall.

With that long of a time frame, they could get a ton of signatures. Also I feel like a lot more people will actually stop and sign this petition. More people are going to respond someone asking "are you against the parking meters?" than when people ask "do you have a minute to save the environment?"

Petitioning may help signers blow off steam, but contract law will keep the parking meter lease deal on track unless one of the parties fails to abide by terms of the agreement. Contracts are bound by offer, acceptance & consideration.

May I encourage activists to survey motorists to discover whether the parking meter rate hike hit retail business employees more so than business customers.

When I tended bar part-time on Halsted Street, I found that most of the Cafe Ba-ba-reba servers parked on street & fed the meters while working the night shift. Parking permit red-and-white signs precluded my fellow employees from parking in nearby residential neighborhoods during our dinner service.

I have a feeling this won't work and Daley will get angry and have some stammering rebuttal to the press and somehow tie in the Olympics to it.

Hey why dont you go to uncommon ground (on Devon 1400 Blk.) Sat.7/11/2009 and ask Mayor Daley to sign it at about 9am

Joey, may I suggest that you encourage such public meetings only if you are assured that your audience is able to meet professionally.
