Pretty much exactly what everyone said would happen. On the plus side, it's a lot easier to find parking on Devon Avenue now...provided you're not staying long.
The most spooky thing was how some people wouldn't give their names for fear of reprisals from the big, bad CITY. That's really unpleasant to read. I mean, it's not as if we have the Gestapo here, but people are still scared to give their names? Shameful. It kind of reminds me of learning that during Harold Washington's campaign, black Chicacoans would call the campaign office and ask how much the poll tax was. And this was in the 80's! Now it's the 21st century and we have Chicagoans still scared of their government. It's a sobering reminder that things never change as quickly as they should.

The first time I was faced with one of those dreaded machines, it took me 10 minutes to figure out how to work it. I felt silly until I realized I was not the only one who could figure out the process. Even an on-duty cop couldn't tell me how to work it. The instructions in English aren't even very clear, so I can only imagine the amount of difficulty non-English patrons are having.
Anna, I agree with you. I was deeply puzzled by the idea that people were so worried about being reprimanded for speaking out.
