I have no idea if Tom would in fact be a good candidate for Cook County Board president, but I like the tenets of his campaign:
I want to be careful here. I got to know Tom during the anti Olympics blitz, and so I like the guy. Also, after his announcement speech, his "entourage" if you will, mostly his wife, mother in law, and a few supporters, invited me for brunch. He's a great guy but beyond that he hates corruption. That's what we need. Keep in mind, I am a Republican and a conservative and right now his campaign sounds the best. That's because we need a true reformer in Cook County. He will make a genuine effort to fight corruption and that's what we need.
I think it will be all that, however running a campaign and having bold ideas and then implementing them are two different things. So, hopefully, he lives up to this high ideals.
Enough valid petition signatures to get on the ballot? The filing deadline is November 2nd, adelle77 & mikevolpe.
Tom told me he needs 300. It won't take much but that's correct he'll have to push.
Especially since Chicago pols like to play the "question every signature" game. He'll need more than 300 in order to get 300.
Why careful?
This is true. It's amazing how many candidates for local office are disqualified based on technicalities. It seems the most important part of running here locally is having a great election lawyer on your team to dot those i's for you.
After assisting independent candidates for the past 15 years since my candidacy petitions were first challenged in 1994, I've learned from experience to engage an election lawyer's services before circulating political nominating petitions.
Unfortunately, that independent spirit which invites independent candidacies is often the undoing of those who choose not to or can't afford the assistance of another qualified professional.
Best advice is to get ten times the required number or petition door-to-door with a registered voter "poll sheet" in hand.
Site petitioning may be the rage because prospective voters come to you, but there's no way to know whether they've signed their name as they do on election day or whether they are even registered to vote at the given address.
That's because the machine hires lawyers to make sure each and every ballot is legal. The machine has the money and power to make it as tough as possible to stop any challenger from running.
