Duplicate share, new perspective, twestgard?
Duplicate share? How does that happen? I am not aware of this.
Allow me to share Leroy Bored's earlier posting:
http://www.windycitizen.com/chicago/politics/2009/11/09/danny-davis-drop...
Perhaps the new Windy Citizen share will will invite further discussion on Congressman Danny Davis' plan to drop out of the Cook County Board President's race, twestgard.
Did Davis' fated candidacy discourage others from entering the race? Majority candidates, Minority candidates, ethnic candidates?
That's WBBM; this is NPR. So, same topic, different articles. Full disclosure: I didn't see the WBBM article before posting. I guess maybe there could be a way to connect multiple articles on the same topic or something.
Brad, can this be another item for the hopper? I know I've submitted articles that I didn't know were already submitted, too.
Plus, it'd be a good feature to see other posts show up that feature similiar topics or people within TWC, in Outbrain fashion.
There is no such thing as "duplicate shares." If someone tries to submit a URL that's already been submitted, the system will point them to the original URL so they can vote it up/talk about it. It is physically impossible for someone to share the same article twice.
If it's not the same URL, then it's a different story and is just as much worth sharing as any other story.
Who cares if it's on the same topic as another? As twestgard pointed out, he saw a cool story and wanted to post it. That's terrific. That's a good thing. Who cares if it's similar to something already posted. Vote up the one that you think is better.
If we only posted one story on each major topic of the day, the WC would max out at 50 stories each day and be really boring.
Please stop telling people their stories are "duplicate shares." It seems like a needless dig. People share stuff because they think it's cool and want others to check it out. When they're constantly being told that their story was already posted, it's needlessly annoying....and it's hurts the sense of community we're trying to build here. The last thing a new member wants to here is that their submitted story has something wrong with it.
If you want to add related stories, that's what these comments are for. There is no white label system that will do a good job of really showing related stories. We can do a better job of sharing related links here in the comments ourselves.
Please stop the duplicate share stuff. It makes no sense. Just vote for the stuff you think belongs on the front page and vote down or ignore the stuff you don't consider worthy.
That clarifies it for me, Brad. FYI, even it it was a duplicate, it's more a reflection on qstrian that he has appointed himself the Windy Citizen police than on me for not knowing what has already been posted. All due respect to WC, but I don't aspire that level of knowledge for this site.
I don't know if policing is his motive; it seems that he just likes to let people know if there's been a similiar post before. He's made me aware of at least one that I've done in the past; it's no big since often I barely have time to skim the first page of Latest News.
Understood 100%. It's humanly impossible to keep track of this stuff, and no one should have to. In a perfect world, we'd get every possible local news story posted here and then the community would use its voting power to promote up the good ones, separating the wheat from the chaff. I guess that's a way of saying my goal is for us to have many more duplicate stories so they can be pitted against eachother.
And there've been more than just a few people calling out "dupes." I wasn't talking about anyone in particular. This happens a good bit. I think it's just a bit of a cultural difference. No biggie.
I prefer to post something that hasn't been posted before, so in a way, having a notification that this url was posted before by somone else is fine with me. But, as you've noted, there can be cultural differences here and so for some it isn't as important or important at all.
Having similiar topics but from different news sources, however, can expand information about the topic,
Understood. That tells me that I need to fix our ridiculously slow search function here on the site, so people can look stuff up quickly.
I mean, yeah, you could, but it doesn't seem crucially urgent to me. People upvote things they like, and when multiple stories on the same topic go to the front page, it's because it's super popular. I don't really think it's broken, so fixing it seems optional at the most.
Commenting upon the story itself, this pretty much paves the way for Preckwinkle, I think. What with Terry O'Brien's recent issues - http://www.windycitizen.com/chicago/politics/2009/11/01/water-district-c...
Feel the passion, fellow Windy Citizens? Haven't we collectively taken this enterprise to a whole new level with our shares, digital images & even digital videos? We now have greater volunteer resources than many of the leading print, broadcast or narrowcast Internet bloggers serving Chicago. Won't concerns about sharing similar topics inspire us to find even more diversity? Testimony to our suceess is that we now have many symbiotic shares, but more significantly, we have discussion threads which are truly unique to Windy Citizen. From the prospective investor's vantage, our discussion threads hash out many of the pressing concerns facing Chicagoans & do so with attribution & well founded arguments.
However challenging it may be to read others' Windy Citizen shares & then submit original work on a new topic or elect simply to participate in anothers shared discussion, your volunteerism has produced a aggregation which is becoming the envy of many conventional reporters, editors & columnists.
In some ways this reminds me of the US Department of State researcher who was tasked by Henry Kissinger to research thoroughly America's fated involvement in the Vietnam War. Frustrated after three presentations, the researcher remarked, this is my best work, Secretary Kissinger!"
"In that case," Mr. Kissinger was heard to reply, "I'll read your report."
On WLS AM this morning they tried to spin this into a race thing, like Davis' sole concern was splitting the black vote.
I think this cynical simplification of Davis' decision is pretty offensive and far from being entirely accurate. Seems to me that he was more concerned about splitting the democratic/left-leaning vote. And he said as much when he dropped out.
Seems to me that some people might be trying to deliberately introduce racial discord as circumstances begin to coalesce around a clear, democratic front runner.
But then, I'm sure this race is going to be dirty right down to the finish line.
Just curious, was it Greg Jarret's show or John Williams?
I agree that twisting his decision into something that it may not be is in poor taste and misleading. I didn't hear the show so I can't comment too much more on it. I've been locked out of my desktop due to computer problems which seemed to be getting better until Sunday night.
It was Don & Roma. I really hate that show. I hate WLS generally. But sometimes in the morning it's on my radio because I listen to Coast to Coast AM at midnight.
Thanks. I had WLS and WGN switched. I am not a fan of WLS. They used to have a few good programs on but that was years ago. (Tony Brown and a couple others that are now dust).
I know what you mean about Don & Roma's show. Coast to Coast? You're a night owl! My mom used to listen to that show (another night owl).
Where's that ratings monitor of mine?
