"No Games Chicago" hosts Olympic skeptic at public forum

"No Games Chicago" is a new grass roots coalition dedicated to stopping the 2016 Olympics from coming to Chicago. They held a forum on Jan 31 that drew 200. The main speaker, Dr. Chris Shaw, has been fighting the Olympics in Vancouver since 2003.

Tom, a question for you.

Do you think Mayor Daley believes Chicago's going to get the games?

Or do you think he's positive it's not going to happen?

I was in the first camp for some time until it became clear that much of the slated development will happen irregardless of whether we get the games or not.

If I may interject, what Mayor Daley believes or doesn't believe is sadly irrelevant, even to Daley himself.

The Mayor has succeeded, throughout the course of his LONG tenure, to make himself synonymous with Chicago's successes while simultaneously divesting himself of its failures. It's truly masterful. He gets the credit for the good stuff while the bad is successfully blamed on someone else or he professes to have no idea that it's happening.

Chicagoans, like most people, are famously willing to overlook the bad stuff and focus on the good and all polticians know this and exploit it. It's a blatant, perhaps deserved, insult to the voters and taxpayers. What is basically being said to the public is "I know you'll ignore all the bad things going on if we have a really huge party! And yeah, you might not be invited, but it'll be SOOOO cool to watch it going on near where you live, right?"
