I totally support a kind of "residency" for teachers.

No longer a member of the esteemed profession, I count myself among those 50% of teachers who end up bailing within their first 5 years on the job.

I was certified at the U of I in Urbana, a fine and respected program. But I found myself very ill-prepared for the realities of the classroom. They loaded me up with a lot a great theory, and indoctrinated me so well that I remain a flaming liberal to this day. But the semester I had of student teaching fell far short of the preparation I think I needed to be a good foot soldier on the front lines of the American educational system.
