You know, if there's been one good thing about Arne Duncan being Secretary of Education, it's that now the whole nation is paying attention to how Daley's school "reforms" haven't reformed all that much.
I want to know if it is a lack of desire to learn and work hard by the students that causes a failing school, or is it a weak teaching staff? If it is a weak staff then that is an easier fix, not easy but still easier. If it is the students, then that fix is more of a challenge.
This goes back to the other story on the site right now, should parents be blamed? If both parents work full time, aren't home until 6 or 7 or later at night, then who is there to get kids to do their work. I think the importance of an education needs to be made more clear again. Even with an education now and degrees, many are still coming out poor after school. Why would you want to do all that work then if you are going to be broke either way?
Get that thought in a high school student's head and they will likely agree that you shouldn't do any work.
