Intriguing digital image, shamarra86! Looks like you have an interesting collection!
Seriously, how could they be so stupid?
You know what, some people really do feel like that Americans should be desensitized to this type of behavior, especially minorities. The fact that this has happened more than once at the same school speaks volumes.
I remember when I lived in Laguna Beach, CA for my first year of school, I was one of only a handful of minorities. Most of my friends were white, and they had similar sentiments about mocking black culture or anything thing associated with it. They felt it was part of freedom of speech and artistic expression since "racism couldn't possibly exist" anymore. I was shocked at how they used the N-word so openly, justifying that its meaning was devalued due to the simple fact that in some dictionaries its used to describe something/someone of ignorance.
Civil rights advocates would gladly have sprung for an altermantive costume. A simple Zorro mask, as worn by the model depicted in the attached digital image, would have sufficed.
Right. If one of the guys was supposed to be Bob Marley, he could've easily expressed this by buying one of the millions of Marley wigs with the beanie cap and dreadlocks. Or the black tennis player, who I am assuming was meant to be Serena Williams...there are so many other ways to artistically express ideas besides putting on black paint.
I had a posting on the Griese issue with metrics of what I considered when the line gets crossed. You'll see that these students clearly struck on on several of them.

What many people don't realize is that visible minorities weren't even allowed in film and theatre for a long time, as they weren't deemed good enough to be mixed in with white folk. The black face issue is a direct connection to very racist practices and the timeline involved.
Really? Again? I remember we at Loyola's student newspaper covered an incident at NU very similar to this two years ago after the Daily Northwestern didn't deem it worthy of coverage.
