Imagining a submerged Aquatics Complex in Lake Michigan for the Chicago 2016 Olympics

Chicago is defined by water. So why isn't the Chicago 2016 committee taking advantage of that for its proposed aquatic complex? Rather than errecting something resembling a "collection of outhouses" why not construct a floating, submerged Aquatic Complex? It's admittedly a bit of a crazy idea, but incorporating our incredible body of water into the swimming venue is a fun thought exercise

Yeah, so the images in the post look cool.

This is still a stupid idea. Here's why:

1. Waves: Have you ever been out sailing on the lake? It's choppy as all get-out. You'd have lake water splashing up all over this thing.

2. Regulations: There are pretty strict rules about how the pools can and can't be constructed for the Olympics and this idea breaks all of them. Remember how fast the pool was in Beijing and how everyone loved it? I guarantee no one would want to swim in this thing for fear of how they'd perform in it.

3. Ecological impact: I'm no tree-hugger, but even I can see that dropping a giant oil-tanker in the lake for the Olympics would be a terrible idea and completely out of character for "green" Chicago.

Fun idea, but no dice.
