Chicagoans for Rio 2016 (link broken)

It would be exciting to host the Olympics here in Chicago. But you know what would be even better? Rio de Janeiro. Just let Rio host the 2016 Olympics. We don't mind. Honest.

This is freakishly well done:

-Latest crimes in Washington Park (where the stadium will be built)
-A look at dilapidated Athens 5 years after the games.
-Fun facts like (1 in 6 Chicagoans back the bid)
-head-to-head nickname generator
-Match the Olmpic host with its budget overrun (!)
-Running count of Chicago's defecit

And there's even a cafe press shop where you can pick up gear like this nifty tote bag:

I actually like this site more than the Chicago 2016 site.

This is insanely good. I just hope it's not too little too late!

Comically, at the very same time Chicago 2016 is trying to sell off the rest of their merchandise: http://stores.xpapparel.com/chicago2016/

Wow, that site *is* nice.

Would have had to have been launched a year ago to have a real impact. Now it's just affecting public opinion, not policy.

I disagree. I think the IOC is looking carefully at public support in the candidate cities. If it's clear that Chicago's not behind the bid, despite millions spent postering the city with propaganda, they will take note.

Like a Packer fan in Chicago. Like a Cubs fan on the South Side. Like somebody from Illinois pulling for the Confederacy during the Civil War. That's how much sense this makes.

What's good enough for Rio isn't good enough for Chicago? Is Rio's city, state and fed. govt. free of corruption? Are their poor better cared for?

If you're against the games, why support dumping them in the lap of a 3rd world country least prepared to incur the costs?

I feel like the people who are anti-Chicago 2016 are being selfish. It would bring in so many much needed jobs to this city. This site's message is to take the Olympics from Chicago and put them in one of the most dangerous cities in the world. What sense does that make?

Anna Tarkov 19 weeks 5 days ago

People against the Olympics in Chicago are, on the contrary, trying to protect the city and its residents. Calling them selfish is completely inaccurate. The jobs that would be brought in by the way would mostly be temporary and the costs may very well make those modest job gains moot. FYI all, the AP is working on a story on this. I just talked to one of their reporters. They also don't know who has put up the site. They tried to contact the people behind it to ascertain their identities and got the response: "We're shy."

We should go back and check out the geniuses who opposed the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 and the Century of Progress in 1933, because these folks are headed for very same dustbin in history.

As the guy on the chicagoansforrio.com web site says, "Send it to Gary. Anywhere. Just not here." Is that clear enough for you?

"It is too late, so stop fighting and enjoy being raped?" I think not.

We have seven years to resign ourselves to having the games if the Chicago bid wins. It's not time to do that yet.

Anyone in government law enforcement knows exactly who owns the Domain ChicagoansForRio.com because they have access to the same Internet tools which I do. The operator of this website showed poor judgment by not having an anonymous Domain registration from the start, not that it would have done him much good.

The website ChicagoansForRio.com is owned by a Kevin Lynch of Chicago according to the original public WhoIs records in DomainTools and public telephone records in AnyWho.

The Sun-Times has a short piece confirming what people figured out here on the WC earlier today.

This city doesn't deserve the Olympics, period. Capricious and arbitrary taxation, selling parking meters to a company that demands exclusive access to law enforcement in furtherance of it's financial goals, and an almost arrogant disregard for the concerns of citizens who DON'T live in affluent neighborhoods have all been nicely swept under the carpet for the benefit of the IOC.

This has nothing to do with corruption - it's negligence and sheer incompetence.

The decision has already been made even if we must wait for an announcement.

How will Windy Citizens graciously work together to make this a successful venture or comfort those invested so much time in presenting Chicago's 2016 Olympic bid?

The quality of one's character rests with the answer to this question.

I want to thank the members of Windy Citizen for making my cyberspace visit to Chicago both interesting and rewarding. If you look at the date/time stamps on the following link you will notice that after September 20, 2009 someone with the same access level to Domain Tools which I enjoy had become very interested in the website www.chicagoansforrio.com and it creator Kevin Lynch.
http://domain-history.domaintools.com/?q=chicagoansforrio.com&page=results

In addition to private investigators such as myself, law enforcement at the national, state and local levels make frequent use of Domain Tools and I strongly suspect that by the end-of-day on September 20 Chicago City-hall knew exactly who Kevin Lynch was and had everything on him including his Kindergarten transcripts. They could have outed Kevin Lynch on September 21 but that would not have fitted the playbook of happy-happy citizens of Chicago supporting the city's Olympic bit. Therefor the fiction was created that the website was the work of computer hackers from Rio which promoted through front organizations and repeated through the media. Even the Chicago Fox News TV affiliate who broke the story nationally was pressured into withdrawing correct story and publishing the “Hacker's From Rio” lie. Fortunately on Monday September 28, the Drudge Report picket-up Chicago Fox News TV being forced to recant, which is how I learned of the website and the associated controversy.

It took me less than one minute to identify Kevin Lynch and verify his address and telephone records from public record source. I spent the next hour posting my findings on as many Chicago BLOGS including that of the Chicago Tribune, Windy Citizen and Kevin Lynch's own BLOG, although I did not know that at the time. By noon September 28 the Chicago mainstream news organizations were breaking the Kevin Lynch story without any attribution to my posts. I did receive recognition from BLOG community and I was very impressed with how quickly the members of Windy Citizen filled in the missing blanks once you had a name to work with. Very well done! It is little wounder that the mainstream median is going bankrupt both financially and morally given the incompetence of the reporting and their slavish devotion to a corrupt power structure. Fortunately the Internet is rendering them irrelevant.

As I take my leave of Chicago my only advice is to always seek the truth, for by seeking the truth you shall be set free.

Hey Peter,

I understand you plan to take your leave of us here, but could you and I perhaps spend a little time today mapping out your comments here a bit more?

Specifically this: "Therefore the fiction was created that the website was the work of computer hackers from Rio which promoted through front organizations and repeated through the media. Even the Chicago Fox News TV affiliate who broke the story nationally was pressured into withdrawing correct story and publishing the “Hacker's From Rio” lie."

That's pretty damning. I that's true, we should make that known at least on here.

Who/what are these "front" organizations?

Who aired the story that this site was created by "hacker from Rio" other than Fox News? We should track down video clips of any such announcements on the air.

If this really happened as you say, we should suss it out so it can't be denied.
