Getting your kicks on Route 66 was the rallying cry of a generation of baby boomers departing the chilled Midwest for California's sunny skies. Yes, there was even a weekly television show named, of course, Route 66!
You're showing your age, bro. This Trib story is a bittersweet one, worth checking out. There's video.
Oh wow, I almost began to cry after reading about this. It's really powerful.
He was so peaceful. One of those people that lived an incredible life I am just hearing about now. I really wish I could have had the chance to run into him on 66.
One of my (feeble) bragging points is that I worked as a teenager in a steak house restaurant on Route 66 (it was still Route 66 then and had the signs to prove it). This was in Countryside, Illinois. I was in love with half of the adult waitresses.
According to "Blues With A Feeling," during the fifties and sixties Little Walter used to finish his return trips from down south by taking the leg of 66 that came into Chicago.
Brings back memories, Disaffected. I used to work just down the street from what is now decommissioned Route 66. I've passed that steak house a millions times on my way to that Italian restaurant (name escapes me) & to the Patio on Route 83.
Back then smoking was still permitted in all eating establishments (in fact the concept of non-smoking areas wasn't conceived yet) and the smoke in that place was brutal! I sure had some nutty experiences at that restaurant. Looking back on it, it was one of the more fun jobs I had, given that being a busboy wasn't a great sign of prestige. Somebody's gotta do it! I forget the Italian restaurant you refer to but if you remember the name, it may jog my memory.
