"Chicago is the standard by which all US city flags should be judged," said one commenter. The survey of 150 city flags by the North American Vexillological Association actually took place a couple of years ago. But it was news to me... I also learned what a vexillologist is.

Some vexillographers who like to think cosmically have tried to design a Flag of the Earth. Some individuals and organizations have promoted designs for a flag, however, none of these designs have managed to gain much broad recognition.
The one below is my personal favorite -
Provo's is definitely the funniest. I looks like a gas station logo.
"Copyright 2004"
I mentioned in the story description this wasn't "breaking" news. Just news to me. And decent conversation fodder.
Vexillology (via wikipedia) - The scholarly study of flags. It was originally considered a sub-discipline of heraldry, and is still occasionally seen as such. It is sometimes considered a branch of semiotics. It is formally defined in the FIAV (Fédération internationale des associations vexillologiques) constitution as "the creation and development of a body of knowledge about flags of all types, their forms and functions, and of scientific theories and principles based on that knowledge." A person who studies flags is a vexillologist, and a person who designs flags is a vexillographer.

#1 Washington DC 9.17

#2 Chicago IL 9.03
#3 Denver CO 8.86
See, that's a good-looking flag.
You could even draw a smiley face on that sun, or PacMan. Versatile!
#4 Phoenix AZ 8.65
Either I was high on wasabi or I actually saw small, square versions of this one in a Japanese restaurant. The name of the place escapes me.
Reminds me of the sigil of a fake kingdom in Final Fantasy or something.
I like it, but I still expect someone to bring me my tempura.
#5 St. Louis MO 8.56
#150 Pocatello ID 1.48
Worst. Flag. Ever.
Oy!
