Chicago photographer photoblogs his Humboldt Park mugging, near death and recovery

Vote this up, people. This is quite a read. I'm so glad to hear he's ok and that he got great care at NU hospital.

When does gang initiation season end? It sounds awful.

Reason # 5483 why Humboldt Park should be carpet bombed.

Well, that's one way of looking at it.

This guy got really lucky.

1. He didn't faceplant off his bike and break his neck.
2. He was able to make it home on his own that night.
3. He didn't die in his sleep that night.
4. He made it to the hospital on his own safely.
5. He made a steady recovery after the docs found SERIOUS injuries inside him.

This could have gone wrong in so many ways.

Ditto, The Commish. He's incredibly lucky. Dilts would probably be regretting this thought...

I just wanted to go to bed and deal with everything the next morning.

...for the rest of his life if things progressed differently at the hospital.

Interesting that there's not a single picture of himself in the entire post.

Great find, adelle77. How did you find this?

Carpet bombed? What do you mean, Tony Bosco?

Chris is a hardy guy who understands that cities are tough and loves them anyway. It's easy to say "Humboldt Park should be carpet bombed" if you don't live there.

I lived a couple blocks from this intersection for years and like Chris, bicycled this street countless times at night. Yeah I'm terrified of getting jumped, but I'd rather deal with it than wake up each morning in Lincoln Park.

While I salute the sentiment, surely your safety is more important than avoiding popped collars and fur-trimmed sweat-jackets?

In the long run, no. An attack like this could happen anywhere in the city. Apartments in Humboldt Park often have amazing value and are close to so much great food, drinking and nightlife. You can live there on a modest wage and access Logan Square, Ukrainian Village and Wicker Park within minutes by bicycle.

It's still a gang-ridden cess pool. A handful of hipsters with little-to-no earning power doesn't make the place cool. If you're going to apply the "crime is everywhere" theory, then I'll say that if you want to live in the city, be prepared to pay for it -- otherwise, move back to the burbs. I hear Berwyn is awesome. All of the crime, with none of the culture.

Me, I prefer to live in a neighborhood where I have little fear of my girlfriend being out past 2am, and where I can literally leave my car doors unlocked and windows down and be assured that nobody will screw with it.

And while I deplore the residents and homogenization in Lincoln Park as much as anyone else, I'd move there before ever purchasing in Logan Square.

It sounds like you watch the news a lot but have never lived there. "A handful of hipsters with little-to-no earning power" is pure ignorance.

Tell us about your experience on the West Side, Tony.

Visit Norwegian American Hospital & you'll discover one of the jewels of the Humbolt Park neighborhood. I may be taking some liberties with the neighborhood's traditional boundaries, but my client's compassionate medical care stands as a beacon! Join us for the Norwegian American Hospital for its annual Viking Ball fund-raiser this October & you'll meet some gracious & talented people who bring civility to those streets which you describe in words I'll not repeat!
