CPS to offer cash for good grades

abclocal.go.com - 1 year ago - 536 views

The Paper Project program will debut in 20 schools this year. Critics of the program call it bribery, but CEO Arne Duncan backs the plan.
The money for the financial incentives comes from private donors. Students would earn their money freshman and sophomore year- and get paid half of the amount at the end of each grading period.

I think this is a good idea; however, I do think this could also create additional problems. The notion of getting paid to do well in school is enticing to students and parents, which could create extra pressure from parents on kids to do well and perhaps repercussions for not doing well. Another problem this could create is the bullying of students that do well by those who don't. Students who do poorly in school could begin to torment those getting paid and even try to take away the money they earned. Of course a solution to the stealing of the money could be to mail the checks to the student's home, but that might not stop the bullying completely.

I think providing incentives is a good idea, but I wonder if offering cash for grades is misguided. The system of paying for grades can (and will) be gamed. If we really think that there is grade inflation in the present system, can you imagine the pressure teachers would face to give better grades if students were paid for grades?

If we want this payment system to work, we would really want the payments to be tied to learning. For example, it would be a better idea to pay for performance on a test (or series of tests) at the end of the sophomore year. If the kids learned by then, they should be able to prove it.

If everyone gets A's, what does an A mean?

It will only be for the poor areas, so everyone shouldn't get too excited. I would like to see a list of the private donors,
not saying their lying but who knows.
