Taste of Chicago 2016: Security in spades, Mayor Daley's name plastered everywhere

Chicago’s biggest annual outdoor food festival, super-sized its security again this year and slathered every flat surface in sight with Mayor Daley's name. Hundreds of thousands of people battled 90-degree temperatures to sample grub from local fan-favorite restaurants. This year’s event is a major test for the city. Just 9 days before the Taste’s first day, Mayor Daley and Chicago 2016 bid leader Pat Ryan made their case for the games to the IOC in Switzerland. Chicago’s in the running for holding the big event: the 2016 summer Olympics. But first thing’s first—hosting the 29th annual food fest.

Much of the Taste’s staples remain the same—Eli’s cheesecake, enormous crowds and sweltering heat. However this Taste can and should be viewed as a strong indication of how the city handles big events and intends to present itself to visitors come 2016. People looking for a taste of what a Chicago Olympics might look like could do worse than to look to "The Taste." Here we'll take a look at security at the event, how it was branded, and point you to the best coverage of it from across the web.

I. A good helping of security, but not too much

Chicago Police Department Superintendent. Jody Weis promised to beef up security at this year’s Taste, saying “folks will feel very safe because they’re going to see a police officer on almost every block,” according to the Sun-Times. Previous year's events have been marred by violence. Last year, Weis' first as superintendent, saw 4 people shot while leaving the event one night. This year's event has been violence free so far, though one man was arrested for allegedly bringing in a loaded handgun Saturday night.

Officers at entrance

This year's Taste had four "security-heavy" entrances. In this photo, officers stand by the one at the Jackson Street entrance.

In addition to braving the crowds, Taste-goers had to vie with frequent loudspeaker announcements encouraging them to "drink plenty of fluids today."

Police Tower #2

This police tower at the east end of Grant Park near Buckingham fountain, a holdout from last year's security arrangments, gave law enforcement officials a bird’s eye view of the massive crowds again this year.

Chicago Fire Department

The Chicago Fire Department had a heavy presence at the Taste, too. Here, a handful of fire trucks lined Monroe Street near the event’s main entrance.

II. A Mouthful of Mayor

In addition to being exceedly-well policed, the other immediately noticeable thing at this year's festival is the near-ubiquity of Chicago's Mayor. There's hardly a surface that doesn't bear his name, ensuring that even if visitors didn’t each much food, they sure got their fill of Mayor Daley. We found a plethora of places where the Mayor’s name was on display. Here are the highlights.

International Banner

Apparently Daley’s gone global. Here we see his name on the banner for the International Pavilion, located just east of Buckingham Fountain.

Daley. Was. Everywhere.

Light post Banner

These advertisement banners were on every single light post. And Mayor Daley’s name was on every single one of them.

Programs, Anyone?

It can also be read as a question: "Who programs Richard M. Daley, Mayor?"

Event Sign

These event signs were littered throughout Grant Park. Daley’s name filled tiny spaces on all of them.

Free, Free, Free

The Taste of Chicago is free to attend. And Daley is Chicago’s Mayor, in case you somehow forgot.

Official Program

These handy programs listed all of the food booths, music events and reminded visitors once again that Chicago’s Mayor is Richard M. Daley.

Tote Bag

Yes, you could even buy this tote bag for $4 and show your Daley pride.

Official Tickets

Here are the official tickets for buying food and drink at the Taste (12 tickets for $8). Look closely and you can see the Mayor’s name branded in the middle of the tickets.

III. What others are saying

While the Olympic Games are a massive production that dwarf even large-scale events like Taste of Chicago, it's not too far off to assume that the city will approach them in similar fashion. As you saw above, if that proves to be the case, expect a city that goes all out to keep thing safe and to plaster its Mayor'd everywhere it can.

Despite beefed up security, weapons still made their way into the Taste on Friday,

Chicago Police arrested 33 people this weekend at the Taste of Chicago -- four for carrying guns and two for carrying knives, police said. Police News Affairs Director Roderick Drew said Saturday night that 31 people were arrested at the Taste of Chicago on Friday.

Four of those people were arrested for carrying guns. One person was arrested for having a sawed-off shotgun inside the Taste and three others were apprehended with guns at checkpoints outside the event, Drew said
