Mayor Richard Daley had hoped to begin airport express service long before 2016 when the city hopes to host the Summer Olympics.
In a blockbuster setback for the Daley administration's planned "airport express service," the CTA announced Wednesday that it will postpone completion of its Block 37 rail super station in the Loop because of the prospect of more than $100 million in cost overruns.
The decision marks a major blow to plans for express trains to run from downtown to O'Hare International and Midway Airports.
CTA president Ron Huberman said the agency will look for a private partner to rescue the project on the most valuable undeveloped site in the heart of the downtown.
But officials provided no clear time line.
