Chicago and Illinois held their own in attracting overseas tourists from the record-breaking swell last year, but their performance lagged spectacular growth in several coastal regions.
The city and state saw 8 percent increases in the number of overseas visitors in 2007, from 2006, according to U.S. Commerce Department statistics released Tuesday. These figures reflect visitors from overseas, not including from Canada and Mexico.
With those gains, Chicago and Illinois maintained their market shares, both about 5 percent. Chicago tied with Washington, D.C., as the eighth-most-visited city, and Illinois tied with Massachusetts as the seventh-most-visited state.
