The first calls between Cubs general manager Jim Hendry and Oakland counterpart Billy Beane about the availability of right-hander Rich Harden came in mid-June.
The latest calls came Monday, when the Cubs' trainer and doctors conferenced with their Athletics counterparts on the health of the coveted pitcher, whose only downside is also the riskiest.
But with the medical team signing off on the soundness of Harden's right arm and shoulder, the teams completed a six-player trade Tuesday -- only a day after Milwaukee's acquisition of Cy Young Award winner CC Sabathia and hours before the Cubs' 7-3 victory against the Cincinnati Reds.
''Jim told me Friday he was pretty certain he couldn't get Sabathia, but he was hopeful about the other,'' said Cubs manager Lou Piniella, who said he didn't learn of the impending deal until he got to Wrigley Field at 3 p.m.
