Jesus, I'm such a wuss. I fired up the video of "Black" with this story and all of a sudden the Admiral was in 6th grade again, Laura Treadwell was the cutest girl in school, and nothing seemed further away than my 16th birthday. Angst!

Agree 100%. I was obsessed with 10, then didn't really listen to anything again until years later when they released Live on Two Legs. That got me digging through their back catalog of albums I'd missed. I think my second phase of fandom peaked when I saw them on the Binaural tour, Ten club seats and all. I thought Riot Act was the worst thing they'd ever put out. Not heard much I've liked since then, either.
Yeah, Riot Act was a bust. There's been some good stuff since then, but a little spotty. The new album is off to a good start, with the release of "The Fixer." Here's a link to it the video if you haven't heard it: http://songza.fm/~haycbb
Those guitar riffs in the beginning are dead give-aways. Stone Gossard's strangely easy to pick out of a lineup.
What bugged me most about Riot Act was that PJ had a lot of buzz going for them with their protesting the war in Iraq and so on. It felt like such a letdown for the resulting album to be so lame.
