Chicago Police HQ suffer temporary telecommunications blackout

Saturday morning, a fire-protection system at Police Headquarters, 3510 S. Michigan Ave.. went off in a telecommunications room. The system automatically disrupted telecommunications for about four hours until those services were restored at 3:30 p.m., according to Police News Affairs spokesman Roderick Drew.

Franchezka Velez, 21 had returned from a deployment in Iraq. She was to return to Chicago with the news she was pregnant. But Velez was mortally wounded in the rampage of fellow U.S. Army soldier Nidal Malik Hasan. Also among Hasan's 13 murdered victims was 21-year-old Bowlingbrook Army soldier Michael Pearson.

Michael Pearson, 21 was preparing for deployment to the Middle East Thursday when he was gunned down at the Fort Hood Army base near Killeen, Texas by a renegade soldier. Darryl Swint is the Monday web producer for the Windy Citizen. He is a native St. Louisan.

He completed his MSJ in New Media from the Medill School of Journalism in December 2007. His multimedia professional project team, sponsored by Yahoo! created a social networking site for a filmmakers collective in Chicago. The team also developed a blueprint of a social networking site for Yahoo!

Darryl earned a B.J. in Magazine Layout and Design from the Missouri School of Journalism and a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has worked as a writer, designer, graphics artist and multimedia journalist at the Detroit News, Gannett News Service, Medill News Service and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
