Mayor Daley is Staying Quiet

Mayor Daley stays hidden while we muse about his silence on public curruption

Owing to our inability to prepare for Q & A Friday by soliciting reader questions, please enjoy the usual format.  However, if you have any questions for us, please ask them in the comments and we'll do our best to answer.

DALEY NEWS

No public appearances today for Mayor Daley.  Perhaps he's practicing for a future when it'll be necessary to stay indoors so as to avoid being videotaped by city authorities.

Of course we're sure any tape of wrongdoing by an elected official would mysteriously go missing.  What are we thinking?  Such a tape would never even exist.  Really, we don't know anything.  We swear.  So don't come knocking.  We know nothing, we promise!

DALEY CHATTER

This Sun-Times blurb is of course not the first to note that Mayor Daley won't call for Roland Burris' resignation like others have done.  But it's the first one where we've seen an actual quote, a careful study in the type of infuriating deflection the Mayor excels at:

"There are so many issues out there that we have -- the job-stimulus program, the housing-foreclosure issue," Daley said. "All these other issues are very, very important for us to keep our eye on the ball and be able to work with everybody involved in regards to implementation. He has to figure that out himself."

If anyone is having trouble understanding why Daley can't get behind a Burris resignation or why he couldn't get behind a Blagojevich resignation, the answer is really quite simple.  Despite the famous saying to the contrary, in Chicago there usually is honor among thieves.

I ALWAYS have trouble understanding the mayor. like the above for instance. What in the heck is he trying to say? Maybe he hopes that we will all just get confused and go away Like the 200 CTA buses did this morning.Safety issue or cost cutting statagey. Some people are smarter than they look.

Thanks for the comment Kaleem.

Indeed, our Mayor has a long and proud history of making no sense whatsoever in his public statements. He's admitted in the past that City Hall reporters have the toughest job since they have to try to make sense of his bizarre utterances.

But have no doubt, he's not stupid. You don't maintain power for that long without knowing what's up.

The mayor is in Washington D.C. on Friday along with other mayors, who met with the Obama administration to discuss the eco-stimumlus plan. That's hardly staying "hidden." Get your facts straight before posting, please.

Thank you very much for the comment. We are aware that the Mayor is out of town. What was meant is that he's staying hidden from the local media and on Monday you'll likely be seeing some sort of coverage of the Mayor's trip to DC. While it was felt that regular readers would understand the intent, perhaps you have a valid point in saying that more clarity is needed. It's definitely something that's being taken under advisement. Thanks again.
