Mayor Daley hits a library and a police ceremony and we hit a childish diversion
DALEY NEWS
11:00am -- Mayor Daley joined city and community leaders (you know, that horde that stands behind the elected leader when there's a press conference) at a branch of the Chicago Public Library located at 9525 S. Halsted. The occasion? That would be the official unveiling of the Abbott-Sengstacke family papers.
Why this is newsworthy is explained to us by this Sun-Times piece which features several slightly disturbing/ironic revelations like these:
Robert Sengstacke said his father and Dawson quietly “did more for blacks than any two African-Americans” in U.S. history and “built a black voting bloc” that stretched from Chicago to Washington and helped elect Richard J. Daley.
“Let’s take the sanitation trucks. Those are white men’s jobs in most cities today. Why is this [different in Chicago]? That was because of what Mayor Richard Daley, John Sengstacke and Congressman Dawson achieved.”
You would be wise to read the entie piece of course, and consider the implications it might have for Chicagoans today, whether they be white, black or any other color.
12:30pm -- Mayor Daley attended the Chicago Police Department's 48th annual recognition ceremony at the Chicago Hilton located at 720 S. Michigan Ave. Apparently it's quite a solemn affair as this description from the ceremony two years prior indicates.

Trying to figure out a way to celebrate the temporary suspension of the issue of parking tickets? Starting your shopping for Dads & Grads already? Or perhaps you simply love Mayor Daley and bright, happy colors. If any of this applies, we've got the perfect item for you. Presenting, with all due gravitas, the Richard M. Daley coloring book. And in case you're not sure what color to use for the Mayor's hands, we recommend green.
