Mayor Daley Drinks a Coke

DALEY NEWS

Mayor Daley spent his morning at a Coca-Cola bottling plant, where the company unveiled 10 new hybrid delivery vehicles.

Wow. Ten hybrids. Way to go, Coke. I’m sure that will mitigate all your other environmental malfeasance. In fact, the air almost immediately started to smell and feel cleaner.

And then Daley spoke.

Reporters were only supposed to ask on-topic questions, but that didn’t stop the mayor from going off on his own little rant.

The mayor tore into the three unions that have yet to agree to Daley’s plan for 15 mandatory furlough days.

"We're negotiating with our unions, instead of having someone getting laid off, a number of unions said, 'Lay them off because we don't want to take 10 or 15 furlough days,'" Daley said.  "But now they tell me they're better laid off...it's unbelievable."

"I try and tell city employees, 'You really believe that?'" Daley told the crowd. "Fine. Then you must have something underneath your pillow."

If the unions don’t meet the Wednesday deadline, 1500 employees will be laid off.

DALEY CHATTER

In other Daley news, City Hall is getting out of a controversial lease with Daley’s nephew Robert Vanecko. The Vanecko affair has plagued the mayor for the last few weeks, after it was discovered that the city gave a major pension fund investment deal to the mayor nephew.  Vanecko used the funds to buy a warehouse, which he then leased back to the city. Nice how that works, isn’t it? Well, the city is getting out of the deal, but it’s not because of the controversy. Heavens no.

"We're reducing the number of trucks utilized for the water department construction, and we will no longer need that large indoor facility this winter,'' said Daley's deputy chief of staff, Lisa Schrader. "So, instead of continuing to pay for indoor leased space for the remainder of the summer and fall months, we are moving those trucks to a city-owned outdoor location while we search for other city-owned sites that will allow us to park the trucks indoors.''

Ah yes, well that all makes sense.

That’s all, folks. Have a great weekend!

Sorry responded to wrong post

ChiBabs,

It will generate revenue for who? And how do you know this? Is the likely increase in taxes and the heartache associated with getting ready likely to be worth it for the ordinary taxpayer of this city? The citizens of Colorado decided it was not worth pursuing the 1976 bid.

Even if we assume there will be a dramatic improvement in revenues to public and private coifers, there is a price to be paid for these games that cannot be measured in dollars.

I for one am not interested in your "big get."

Adam, a question after reading your post. The city had these indoor facilities for the trucks prior to entering a lease with Robert Vanecko. How is it that the city doesn't realize what it already has, that it is entering into contracts for resources it doesn't need? Would it be fair to say this is evidence of poor management?

ChiBabs, this was one of the few recent postings where I didn't mention the Olympics, so not sure where that comment came from.

Lou, she says they no longer need Vanecko's space because they are reducing the number of trucks, but then goes on to say that they are using a temporary space until they can find spots in city-owned indoor spaces.

So it's not clear to me what the excuse really is. Do they need the space or are they reducing the fleet? Poor management seems less likely than a straight-up lie. And that's something they tend to do quite competently.
