About this blog

In It for The Long Run is for runners of all abilities and goals.  It will explore the Chicago area and provide information about training, local races, running stores, and other things of interest to most runners.

Occasionally, I may provide some fun running anecdotes.  If you’re a runner you know what I mean.  Maybe I’ll tell you about the time I found a domestic rabbit while running in the woods and spent more than an hour catching it, or about the time a deer ran into me, literally.

The ultimate play list

Not only is it cold now, but it's snowy and icy.  This necessitates some indoor running.  In fact, on Monday I did my first real treadmill run of the season.  I made it a little more than 4 miles before I had to call it quits due to extreme boredom and an achy left knee.

Indoor workouts, however, can still be productive and maybe even a little fun.  My sister and I usually haul it to the gym together for what we half jokingly call TBW (total body workout).  TBW, for us, includes a little treadmill time, a spin on the bike, and then some free weights and ab work.

But before I can even think about running or working out inside, I must have a legitimate play list ready to go.  Currently, I have three running play lists:  Running, Running2 and Still Running.  My favorite play lists are usually a good mix of top 40 and classics, although Running2 is devoted almost entirely to the ‘80s and early ‘90s.  Here are some of the classic songs that will never be booted from my running mix.

  1. Running Down a Dream, Tom Petty
  2. The El, Rhett Miller…Who wouldn’t love a song about Chicago public transportation?
  3. Sellout, Reel Big Fish
  4. Heaven Is a Place on Earth, Belinda Carlisle…Yes, this is from Running2.
  5. Love is a Battlefield, Pat Benatar…Again, Running2.
  6. Sunday Bloody Sunday, U2
  7. Lovesong, The Cure
  8. Through the Wire, Kanye West…I think there’s a shout out to Chi town.
  9. Take on Me, A-ha…One hit wonder!
  10. Harder to Breathe, Maroon 5

I would be able to add some to this list. I guess it's all a matter of opinion ;-)

My "Power Song" on my Nike+ Kit is NIN's instrumental "Just Like You Imagined"...one of the most powerful instrumentals I have ever heard.

I think it is almost impossible to survive at home without a proper play list because nothing works well. I suffer that boredom each year in winters of each year for first week. Thanks for sharing your play list.

I have always thought that it was amazing that when you have the right playlist according to your personality that help to liven you up for a workout, its amazing how that can affect the way that you absorb energy and release into the weights.

The total body workout is the best. I usually bring my iPod and watch TV shows that I downloaded like TopChef or something reality tv. However, if I go to music, your choice of Maroon 5 is really good. Motivating.

It sounds like you guys do that often. What does the diet look like to compliment the energy burn?

Yea, I really love Maroon 5. Diet is actually not all that strict -I find that by not limiting myself I tend to eat healthier anyways. But I do eat a ton of fresh fruits and veggies to keep me full. This winter I've been into root vegetables - carrots, turnips, parsnips - they are super hearty.
