Eddie Vedder Releases Cubs Tribute Song

THIS JUST IN:

Now that we're on the verge of a Cubbie Clinching as early as Thursday, Pearl Jam frontman and lifelong Cubs fan Eddie Vedder has written, recorded and released his tribute song, "Someday We'll Go All the Way." (Apparently it's a live version. I don't think there is a studio version yet.)

I haven't actually heard the song yet, but two Chicago radio stations made reference to having played it this afternoon.

UPDATE:

Based on the discussion at Bleed Cubbie Blue, it looks like 93.1 WXRT recorded a live version of the song at the Auditorium Theater at Roosevelt University and that is what they are playing.

Here is a link to a large MP3 of a live version of the song, but you'll definitely want to have the lyrics handy when you listen to it. (via Jeff Vrabel) If you have a better link, pass it on!

Here are the lyrics:

Someday We'll Go All the Way
by Eddie Vedder

via Carter's Baby Blog

Yeah, don't let anyone say that it's just a game.
For I've seen other teams and it's never the same.
When you're born in Chicago, you're blessed and you're healed,
The first time you walk into Wrigley Field.
Our heroes wear pinstripes and heroes in blue, Give us the chance to feel like heroes too.
Whether we'll win and if we should lose, we know
Someday we'll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we'll go all the way.

We are one with the Cubs, with the Cubs we're in love.
Yeah, hold our heads high as the underdogs.
We are not fair-weather, but foul-weather fans.
Like brothers in arms, in the streets and the stands.
There's magic in the Ivy and the old scoreboard.
The same one I stared at as a kid keeping score.
In a world full of greed, I could never want more.
Someday we'll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we'll go all the way. (repeat)

And here's to the men and the legends we've known.
Teaching us faith and giving us hope.
United we stand and united we'll fall
Down to our knees the day we win it all.
Yeah, Ernie Banks said, "Oh, let's play two".
Or did he mean two hundred years?
In this same ballpark, our diamond, our jewel.
The home of our joy and our tears.
Keeping traditions, and wishes made new,
The place where our grandfathers' fathers, they grew.
The spiritual feeling if I ever knew.
And if you ain't been, I am sorry for you.
And when the day comes for that last winning run, and I'm crying and covered in beer.
I look to the sky and know I was right today.
Someday we'll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we'll go all the way.

(Note: This is what I heard in the radio version. I've seen variations online from other performances.)

Apparently Vedder debuted the song at his live performances at the Auditorium Theater in August as a birthday present to Ernie Banks. Now that local radio stations have picked it up, I'm sure it will be played ad nauseum when Cubs fever reaches its blistering crescendo tomorrow (or later this week).

Anyone have a quality link to the song? I haven't found much on the Google and all the Youtube videos of the concert have been removed.

Post a comment if you find it!

That's awesome...I too would be interested in hearing the song. Hopefully someone can turn up the link?

Matt,

Congrats on the season. You guys were better this year. It was tough to watch Jimmy catch the clinching out, but he got a raw deal here towards the end. I'm happy for him. Though I can't bring myself to root for the Cubs now, if they make it to the Series, I'm an NL guy and will support an NL team -- unless the Cubbies are playing the White Sox.

These are pretty cool lyrics. It's very appropriate for a Cubs theme song.

Found a link to a Youtube version that does have a great version of the audio. The video looks commercialized, however, so that's a disappointment, but the version is worth it. Shame on those trying to make a buck from my love of the Cubbies. Anyway, here's the link:

Thanks for the link! That is the version that is getting radio play. I've never been a big Vedder fan, but the song is pretty appealing. The anthem-like, sing-along quality is perfect for the sentiment the song is expressing. Apparently "All the Way" will be available for download at pearljam.com very soon. I heard a radio deejay said it will be available tomorrow, but the site says "in the next few days."

If you're dying to hear it the legal way on the radio, you can find out when 101.9FM will next play the ditty by texting the word "cubs" to 63532.

This is a plea for my girlfriend A.A to stop believing in the CUBS! Wake up! The Cubs love your money! Not You!

This song will be very appropriate after they get beat in the playoffs this year! Come home babe! To the Souhside! Home of the 2005 WS Champs!

The Cubs will never love you
The way that i love you
Cuz if they did, no no
They wouldn't make you cry
They must be fooling baby
For you my love
My love

So will you kiss them
I wanna see you kiss them
I'm gonna see you kiss them, Goodbye

Na Na Na Na,
Hey Hey Hey
Goodbye

Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na
Hey Hey Hey
Goodbye

There never near you
To comfort and cheer you
When all those sad tears are
Falling baby from your eyes

They must be fooling baby
Fooling my love
Its alright love

I wanna see you kiss them
I'm gonna see you kiss them, goodbye

Na Na Na Na
Hey Hey Hey
Goodbye

Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na
Hey Hey Hey

I really love you girl
I really need you
I need to have u near me everyday

You know thats true girl
I really need u girl
I cant let u be with them
When its not right

Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na
Hey Hey Hey
Goodbye

That seems like a funny song, but the guy who posted above me might take the cake. I myself can relate to unrequited love for a team who never shows love back by winning something. http://onewisemedia.com/donate-real-estate/

That's great, love the lyrics, would be perfect if we could hear the music. Go Cubs!

Has a studio version been released yet?
