Tech Loop's Greatest Hits

What People Are Saying Here

Gmail Pimps Your Inbox

Google unveiled one of the most anticipated (and least functional) features for a most Gmail users yesterday – THEMES! If you aren't using Gmail, now is a great time to make the switch to the world's hottest webmail client. Though some users are left waiting for the feature, Google promises to have themes distributed to every Gmail user in the very near future . The greater share of users who opened their inboxes on Wednesday were greeted with a salutation at the top of the screen inviting them to try one of about 30 pre-loaded themes to spice up their Gmail page - here is a sampling:

The update also included an update to the default Gmail theme, which is a welcome relief because the Gmail clothing hasn't really changed much at all since its launch in 2005. The plain monochromatic blue scheme with splashes of orange was definitely functional, but just didn't seem to make Gmail very interesting to look at. I personally like the "shiny" theme:

We are hoping that users will be able to author their own themes for Gmail in the near future, much like "iGoogle", which already allows the user to create their own themes for use on their Google homepage.

Strangely, Tech Loop would also like to point out that this feature happened on the same day as the launch of the new XBOX dashboard "theme". Coincidence? We think not.

So, fellow Gmailers – has your account picked up the new feature or are you still waiting? If you have it, what theme are you rolling with? Share your thoughts about Gmail themes in the comments below…

my g-mail doesn't have themes, why? It sounds cool, my friends have themes...why don't I?

Well - Gmail has an INSANELY large user base, and replicating features such as this take some time to do. You will have it in the very near future, so don't worry! 95% of people are supposed to have it by week's end :-)
